| PENNY LANE SCHOOL POLICIES IN CHILD GUIDANCE |
| We believe each child is a unique individual that has the ability to develop self-control and assume the responsibility for their own actions. Our goal is to facilitate the maximum development of the whole child and provide them with positive guidance and the skills they need to make their own decisions. We believe… • Children need a clear understanding of what is expected of them • Providing limits and consequences that are clear and understandable help children make good choices and accept the consequences for poor choices • Limits and consequences should be explained to the child and consistently enforced • Children respond well to positive reinforcement of desirable behavior • Preschool children shall have the opportunity to resolve their own conflicts • Staff shall acknowledge positive behavior and ignore or redirect negative behavior • Children three years and older may be given time away from the situation and put in a quiet place to think about the effect of his/her behavior.(this is not a punishment but rather time to calm down and think about how to fit in) Removal from the group shall not exceed one minute per year of age. Behavior Management: When there is a specific plan for responding to a child’s pattern of unacceptable behavior, all staff who affects the child shall be aware of the plan and cooperate in its implementation. Clinical behavior management plans may be developed with the parents and professional clinician. This must be documented in the child’s file. All staff working with the child shall receive training on implementing the plan. The following behaviors are PROHIBITED in all child care settings… • Corporal punishment, including hitting, spanking, swatting, beating, shaking, pinching and other measures intended to induce physical pain or fear. • Threatened or actual withdrawal of food, rests, or use of the bathroom • Abusive or profane language. • Any form of public or private humiliation, including threats of physical punishment or any form of emotional abuse, including shaming, rejecting, terrorizing or isolating a child • Children shall not be disciplined for toilet accidents Parent involvement includes… • Requested when the director or lead teacher sees a pattern of unacceptable behavior and contacts the parents. • Needed in order for the parents and teacher/director to discuss the undesirable behavior and agrees on strategies to help guide the child effectively. • Necessary if it is in the best interest of the children and adults for the child to be picked up for the day. Child involvement includes… • Being aware of limits set for classroom behavior. • Learning to negotiate conflict Grounds for discharge include… • Any child who is unable to benefit from the type of care offered by the facility or is a safety threat to themselves or the other children in the center. • Parents who refuse to cooperate with the center and work together in order to help the child.
